Introduced in 2018, study clubs are held on two afternoons per week for selected learners from Grade 4 to Grade 12 who show potential for academic and personal development. In July 2019, additional study clubs were rolled out specifically for Grades 7 and 8 since this transition age is identified as a high-risk phase of development.
These specific study clubs help equip and prepare Grade 7 learners to better meet the challenges of their next year of high school and prepare Grade 8’s for their first year at high school All study clubs are supervised by a trained practitioner and a volunteer mentor, who create a nurturing, supervised environment in which learners can develop the life skills they need to deal with issues like peer pressure, bullying or failing grades.
The clubs provide a safe space where learners can experience personal growth and improve their school performance. A light snack is provided at each session and, in special cases, transport is offered for learners living far afield. Teachers are encouraged to participate in the clubs so as to reinforce the importance of a strong work ethic in the classroom.
